Jan Joling, geboren op 28 september 1957, rondde in 1978 de opleiding tot rijksaccountant bij de Belastingdienst af en trad in dienst van de Rijksaccountantsdienst te Alkmaar. In 1981 maakte hij de overstap naar de Fraude Centrale van de Centrale Recherche Informatiedienst (CRI). Voor deze dienst heeft hij, in samenwerking met de opsporingsinstanties en justitie, deelgenomen aan een aantal geruchtmakende en grootschalige fraudeonderzoeken, zoals Slavenburgs Bank en de Tilburgsche Hypotheekbank. Hij hield zich bij de CRI ook bezig met beleidsadvisering, managementtaken en opleidingen op het gebied van financiële recherche. Op grond van kennis en ervaring werd hij door het gerechtshof te Amsterdam in 1984 beëdigd als vast gerechtelijk deskundige.

In 1986 maakte hij de overstap naar het bedrijfsleven. Als onafhankelijk schade-expert op financieel gebied (goederen-, bedrijfs- en aansprakelijkheidsschades) was hij werkzaam bij enkele expertisebureaus, waaronder Cunningham PolakSchoute te Amsterdam.

In 2000 volgde de benoeming tot partner van Deloitte, waar hij met name bijzondere onderzoeken verrichtte naar fraude- en integriteitskwesties, geschillen en schadeclaims. Bij 4i Trust, een onafhankelijk forensisch accountants- en onderzoeksbureau, deed hij soortgelijke werkzaamheden.
