Bij de berekening van schade die bedrijven hebben opgelopen door gederfde winst of geleden verliezen, internationaal aangeduid als economic losses of commercial damages, kan de accountant een rol vervullen. Als eenmaal vaststaat dat een verplichting tot schadevergoeding bestaat, veelal op grond van onrechtmatige daad of wanprestatie, zal vervolgens moeten worden vastgesteld welk bedrag als schadevergoeding moet worden uitgekeerd. Het civielrechtelijke begrip vermogensschade laat zich omschrijven als ‘nadeel waardoor iemand in zijn vermogen of in andere belangen (zogenoemde onstoffelijke schade) wordt getroffen’.
De deskundige houdt zich niet bezig met de voorwaarden voor het ontstaan van een schadevergoedings-plicht en daarmee samenhangende onderwerpen, zoals de normen die invloed kunnen hebben op de hoogte van het schadebedrag dat uiteindelijk aan de benadeelde moet worden uitgekeerd en contractuele of wettelijke beperkingen van aansprakelijkheid. Hetzelfde geldt voor het leerstuk van de causaliteit.
